Anti-Racism Statement by the WVCI Steering Committee

Racism and racial prejudice are an unacceptable part of American history we all must work consciously to eliminate.  The Women’s Vote Centennial Initiative stands with our partners and allies in condemning the unending violence that targets Black women and men throughout our country.

The WVCI emphasizes that the American women’s suffrage movement was a multicultural movement that, from the beginning, included the participation and leadership of women from many races and backgrounds.  The Initiative works in support of an understanding of American history that includes people of all races and recognizes the fundamental importance of the campaign for women’s civil rights, which continues to this day.

The WVCI is committed to representing and commemorating a suffrage movement that is broad and inclusive, full of contradictions and failures as well as courage and ultimate success.  pay tribute to the vision and bravery of American women who fought for equal rights and the right to vote in the face of oppression and terror. They fought for justice knowing that true justice means institutional and political change. By doing so, they ensured greater justice throughout the nation.  That justice must extend to all communities, and discrimination and racist violence in America must be stopped.
